Presented by the Standing Committee on Corrections & Sentencing

Join us from the comfort of your home or office for this one-hour live webcast to learn what to expect at a sentencing hearing, including the hearing process, presentence reports, aggravation/mitigation evidence, and the judicial perspective! Hypothetical scenarios will be presented to assist attendees in understanding sentencing hearings. New or young attorneys practicing criminal law, as well as general practitioners who may occasionally handle criminal cases, who join us online for this seminar will:
  • Discover the basic procedure for criminal sentencing hearing, including when they occur, presentence investigation reports, and types of evidence;
  • Understand how a judge decides what the appropriate sentence is;
  • Learn the prosecutor's role in a sentencing hearing, including what the prosecutor’s goal is and how the prosecutor decides on which evidence to submit in aggravation; and
  • Understand the duties of the defense attorney during a sentencing hearing, including choosing evidence to submit in mitigation and working with defendants.
